By 1978, Rolex introduced the ref. 16660 Sea-Dweller fitted with a sapphire crystal, a bigger helium release valve and an upgraded depth rating to 4,000 feet or 1,220 metres. While all previous Sea-Dwellers featured Rolex’s caliber 1575, the ref. 16660 introduced the caliber 3035. The most significant change represented by this movement was the increase of vibrational speed from 19,800vph to 28,800vph, endowing the movement with far greater autonomy from shocks. This is the longest-running manifestation of the Sea-Dweller and has remained essentially unchanged for more than three decades.
Sadly, in 2008, Rolex announced the end of an era when it replaced the Sea-Dweller with the Rolex Deepsea, a watch with a frankly stupendous and never-before-realised depth rating to 12,000 feet or 3,900 metres. This is made possible by a three-piece case architecture featuring a middle section fabricated from nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel and rendering a timepiece capable of withstanding “pressure that would crush a sub”.

The case diameter is 42mm like on all other Royal Oak Offshore Divers and the watch can withstand the pressure at 300 meters deep. Total weight of the watch approximately 170 grams. The new dial, gorgeous in our opinion adds perfect contrast to the black rubber strap and its inner rotating bezel is as glossy and easy to read as it gets. Another big change is that the calendar wheel is white instead of black as it is on all other Divers with the exception of the one in white ceramic.
This watch is also fitted with a beautiful rubber strap with a thick rubber grain very different to that on other Offshore straps and comes with a tang buckle in stainless steel. On the wrist, this new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver Silver-Tone White Dial just presented at the SIHH 2015 seems to wear slightly larger than its predecessor —at least optically.

Well, perhaps, the “big date” indicator at 12 o’clock could have been slightly bigger: compared to the pair of numerals on the dial, the calendar numbers look especially small. As does the setting crown that looks quite short and not particularly comfortable when it comes to operating the gadget.
According to the Swiss watchmaker, the watch will be offered with a set of rubber and heavy canvas NATO straps and will retail at a more or less affordable price of $4800.
