The new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39MM 114300-70400 review

For 2015, Rolex has created a new 39mm version of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, offering a slightly larger iteration of one of their entry-level models.
The 2015 Rolex Oyster Perpetual have 4 sizes, starting from the ladies’ only 26mm and 31mm to a unisex 34mm (that could look quite cool on a man’s wrist, for a discreet vintage feeling) and the possibly future best-seller, a 39mm edition. The case is all about Rolex, meaning a solid 904L stainless steel block with integrated lugs (and thankfully, some rather slim lugs here) that features mirror polished casebands and brushed flat surfaces. The bezel is simply bevelled and mirror polished. The bracelet shares the same quality and brushed finish on the 3 links. It features the well finished and practical Oysterclasp buckle (with easy adjustment). Basically, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a less sporty edition of the Rolex Explorer 1 39mm (same case, same bracelet and buckle, same bezel and same movement). The main differences are the dial and the hands.

 

The 39 millimeter Rolex 114300 is bound to be a classic. I don't know about you, but in my mind, this Rolex's dark rhodium dial has a similar aesthetic to the prototype Singer dials notably featured on Rolex Passion Report. To most guys, the bright blue hour transfers wouldn't be such a big deal. I happen to be totally in love with this watch simply because of those hour transfers. Furthermore, a 39 millimeter case diameter is rare for such a no-frills piece. If anything, the 114300 is particularly Milgauss-like, an aspect I applaud. 

All three versions come on a solid 904L steel bracelet with a folding Oysterclasp and are priced from 5,400 CHF. In my opinion a fair price for a stainless steel manufacture watch of high quality. Admitted, it is a watch with not a single complication, but it’s also a watch that you will never get tired of and as written before, a high-quality watch that will keep its value over time as well. The 39mm diameter makes it a very interesting alternative to the 41mm Datejust and Milgauss models as well as to the smaller 36mm versions. A perfect in-between size that only has to compete with the 39mm Rolex Explorer 214270.
