History about the TAG Heuer Autavia
In 1933, Heuer designed the first dash counter for racing cars and aircraft: the Autavia chronograph. The name was a contraction of AUTomobile and AVIAtion. Yet, this is in 1962 that the story really begins, with the Autavia wristwatch. Jack Heuer, the fourth generation head of the company, created his first wrist sports chronograph. Its innovative signature: a rotating bezel. For many, the Autavia is far more symbolic of the automotive side than aviation. Its ambassadors were the greatest Formula 1 drivers of the 1960s and 1970s: Jo Siffert, Mario Andretti, Jochen Rindt, Derek Bell, Clay Regazzoni, Gilles Villeneuve, Jacky Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi, Graham Hill, Mario Andretti, Björn Waldegård and even Steve McQueen wore the model – something that was of course linked to the history of Heuer as a brand. The first match pits two very similar watches- Mk3 and Mk4 versions of the 3-register 2446 Autavia. The only real difference here are the hour markers, which are applied metal on the MK3 versus lume strips on the MK4.
The second final offers more contrast- A Compression-case Autavia up against a “fantasy” model, which is essentially the same MK3 Autavia from our first final but with the colours reversed.
Of these two, the heart pulls for the 2446C SN, but the head pulls for the MK3 Autavia- given that this watch shares its case with both of the finalists in the other battle, one could imagine TAG Heuer deciding to put both models into production, something unlikely if the compression case models wins due to its different design.
The 2017 TAG Heuer Autavia, Now In Its Final Form
The 2017 Autavia will be presented in a 42mm stainless steel case, which is a little more imposing than the original reference, which measured 39mm. It’s also going to be a lot thicker, so while it looks very faithful to the original watch, it doesn’t quite wear like one. In particular, the 12-hour bezel is wide and bold, making the watch look rather big.
The dial is almost exactly what was shown during the final stage of prototyping. And that’s absolutely fine. It's a classic reverse panda dial, with a deep black ground and white sub-registers. Those sub-registers are a 30-minute counter at three o'clock, a 12-hour counter at nine o'clock, and a runnings seconds counter (with a date window tucked in) down at six o'clock.
